The Merchant Navy is a commercial fleet that transports goods, cargo, and passengers globally. It offers well-paying jobs with opportunities to work on ships operated by private companies.
The Indian Navy is a defense force that serves the country for national security purposes. It requires military training and service commitment.
There are two major career paths:
β Deck Department β Responsible for ship navigation, safety, and operations. (Captain, Chief Officer, Deck Cadet, etc.)
β Engine Department β Manages ship machinery, engines, and maintenance. (Marine Engineer, 4th Engineer, etc.)
Eligibility depends on the course you choose, but in general:
β Minimum Age: 17 years
β Educational Qualification: 10th or 12th pass (Science/PCM preferred)
β Medical Fitness: Must pass DG Shipping-approved medical tests
β Good eyesight: No color blindness, eyesight should be 6/6 or within limits
You can enroll in approved courses like:
β GP Rating (General Purpose Rating) β 10th pass, 6-months course
β DNS (Diploma in Nautical Science) β 12th PCM, 1-year course
β BSc Nautical Science β 12th PCM, 3-year course
β Marine Engineering (BTech) β 12th PCM, 4-year course
Β Some courses require entrance exams, such as:
β IMU-CET (Indian Maritime University β Common Entrance Test)
β Company-Sponsored Exams (Anglo Eastern, Great Eastern, etc.)
